The digital landscape, while brimming with opportunities, also presents unique vulnerabilities, especially for children. At AbleRise Africa Society, we believe in transforming these challenges into triumphs of advocacy and protection. That's why we were thrilled to participate in the recent Launch of Social Media Advocacy on Online Child Protection, a vital initiative spearheaded by the Children Rights Advocacy and Legal Aid Foundation (CRALAF). We extend our deepest gratitude to CRALAF, alongside the Ministry of Gender, Culture and Children Service, the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE), the Communications Authority, and Terre des Hommes Netherlands, for empowering our members as digital Child Champions.
This pivotal event, held on November 20th, 2025, at Nairobi's Swiss Lenana Mount Hotel, convened a powerful alliance of social media actors, influencers, and community journalists. The rallying cry was clear: "Your Voice. Their Protection."
This resounding message struck a chord with AbleRise Africa Society, where empowering marginalized voices, particularly within the disability community, is at the very heart of our mission. Just as we advocate for accessible physical spaces, we recognize the urgent need to champion safe and inclusive digital environments for all children, including those with disabilities who may face additional barriers and risks online.
The training offered a crucial toolkit, directly reinforcing core commitments on championing child rights. Imagine a child with a communication disability who might struggle to report online abuse; our trained members can now identify such vulnerabilities and advocate for accessible reporting mechanisms and tailored support. Furthermore, promoting ethical, child-sensitive reporting and storytelling is not just about avoiding harm, but about amplifying authentic narratives. This means moving beyond tokenistic portrayals of children with disabilities online, instead showcasing their strengths, experiences, and agency in a respectful and dignity-affirming manner.
Crafting responsible, dignity-affirming online content is another area that we believe will make tangible difference. Consider the proliferation of misinformation or stereotypes about disability online; we are now better equipped to challenge these narratives, creating content that promotes understanding, inclusion, and positive representation. Additionally, this is crucial for children with disabilities, who deserve to see themselves accurately and positively reflected in the digital sphere. Moreover, the ability to amplify advocacy against harmful practices such as FGM/C, child marriage, and online exploitation takes on an even greater urgency when considering the heightened risks some children with disabilities face due to lack of awareness or targeted exploitation.

This opportunity solidifies our role as proactive guardians of online child safety. By contributing to safer, more inclusive online spaces, we are directly impacting the well-being of all children, especially those within the disability community who often navigate unique digital challenges. We are now not just participants, but recognized online advocates, connecting with a network of like-minded professionals to collectively weave a stronger safety net in the digital world.
We are proud to be part of the unbreakable shield, shaping a digital future where every child is protected, respected, and empowered.
